Kirkenes – Vaggatem (prox. 95 km)
The trail starts from the market place in
the centre of Kirkenes, mush through A/S Sydvaranger’s industrial area, and
follow the railway line. At Tunnelmyra, turn along the water course to Store
Holmvannet. Mush over Grensefjellet to Georgvasstoppen, then down to Lille
(small) Fiskevann and Store (large) Fiskevann, Langvatnet, Lomvann, before
heading down to cross the road (RV 885) at Ørnevann. Continue along
Firkantvann, down Namdalen to Langfjordvannet. Once on Langfjordvannet, the
route follows the public scooter trail. After about 3 km on the lake, turn off
to the right (west) and follow the scooter trail up Meiniskalia, over Mosemyra.
Waypoints are then Låmbåla water course, Øvretjønna, Steintjønna, the edge of
Skjortevann and down Sametiveien, aiming for Store Sameti. Just before Store
Sameti, turn left at the road crossing. Cross the Sametielva river by means of a
small, old wooden bridge, and follow the forest track towards Malbekkvassdraget. From the forest
track, swing left (east) down the Malbekk
water course, following this towards Malbekkvannet. From Malbekken, continue
eastwards over Båttjønna, down towards the Markina water course and then down
towards Skjellbekken, where there is a road crossing. Follow the marsh towards
the north-west corner, then continue up the
Pasvik river on the public scooter trail (marked here by the Norwegian armed
forces).
At Vaggetem, there is cold water available
from a hole in the ice, straw for the dogs, a café serving hot and cold food,
and cabins with beds, reserved for mushers.

Vaggetem – Neiden (prox. 100 km)
From Vaggetem, take the trail over the
frozen marsh towards Sortbystkjernveggen and Ellenelva in the north, along the
south side of Gjetmundsentjønna, over Høvatnet, follows Føllelva, and the
sothend of Lille Følvannet. It runs along Store Føllvannet and follows the border with
Finland. Along the border, over Abborvannet, over Njukcavarri, follow the
border to Raddjoaivi (Rajapää). Continue along the border over Mikkulavarri and
Raddjevarri, down the valley to Havgajaguolba, Raddjeguolba (Grensemoen) and
Svartdalsmyra. The trail then goes up again to Raddjejavri, then down to the
marshes that runs along the border with Finland. The road crossing at Bjørkenes
has good visibility in both directions. Continue in to the checkpoint Neiden at
Neiden Fjellstue.
At Neiden, cold water is available from open
water tanks. There is straw for the dogs, a café serving dinners and cold food,
and cabins with beds reserved for mushers.

Neiden – Kirkenes (prox. 105 km)
From Neiden, the trail follows the marshes
and water courses across Vegvatnet. There is a climb along the side of
Oaivat,
over Gaidnuratkuhatrjavri, then a downhill section towards Munkelva. The trail
crosses Munkelva river then climbs up to Biekkanjavri, Jægeljavri,
Andilagoattejavri, Rastajavri and onwards to Brannvasstjønna. Turns towards
north and follow the water course to Korsdalen (valley), where the trail heads
south east and follows Suoppasjåkka to Sandnes-Langvannet. Cross
Sandnes-Langvannet. About 1.5 km to the south east, turn towards Flåtevann and
Palmstrømvannet. Here, the trail turn north east, following Skaidi and the
water course to Skalvejavri at Dabmutoaivi. Head east to Holmvannet and then
south again to Sagvannet. Follow Sagvannselva river down to Langfjordvann and
meet the same trail that was used on the first leg, as you head back to Kirkenes
and the finish at the Rica Hotel (‘Turisten’).
