WELCOME TO BERGEBYLØPET
2 x 115 km Open-class and 8-dog class 2 x 50 km 6-dog team
9-10 February 07 Start 9 Feb, 2100 hours from Tana Family Camping. Skiipagurra, Tana MUSHERS MEETING9 Feb, 1900 hours at Tana Family Camping.
START From Tana Family Camping. First dog-team sets off at 2100 hours. 1 minute interval between dog teams. The race begins with Open-class, followed by 8-dog class, then 6-dog class. Race fee of kr 150 to be paid with race registration at the Mushers Meeting.
MANDATORY REST AND CHECKPOINTS One leg of 115 or 50 km is raced, according to class. A mandatory rest of 5 hours is to be taken at Skiipagurra Family Camping. New start times will be calculated according to the number of competitors. Teams then start out again on the second leg of the race (same course). Mushers will be given straw and cold water for the dogs. Depot sacks can be collected at the checkpoint. During the mandatory rest, dog teams must be secured with an additional anchor at the front. At the end of the race, each musher is to clear away the straw they were given.
FINISHThe race finishes at Tana Family Camping. The first team to the finish in each class is the winner of that class.
LONG DISTANCE RULES Bergebyløpet is run according to the Long Distance Rules Norwegian Dog-Sledding Assocation. The rules are listed below, and are taken from the Norges Hundekjørerforbund (NHF) sin webside.
MANDATORY EQUIPMENTThe following equipment is mandatory. Spot-checks can be made at the start of the race, at checkpoints and at the finish. A musher who does not have all the mandatory items may be disqualified from the race. It is the musher’s responsibility to make sure that mandatory equipment travels in the sled from start to finish. It is possible to exchange or replenish mandatory equipment at the checkpoint, but this must be done under the control of a race official. · Compass and map of race area. · Functional snow shovel. · Sleeping mat and winter sleeping bag (minus 20°C). · Water cooker with capacity for ½ litre water per dog in the team. · ½ litre red spirit. · Rubbish sack. · Extra set of clothing (trousers, jacket and boots). · First aid equipment. · Head torch and batteries. · 4 booties per dog (either in the sled or in use). · Matches. · Light stick or signal flare that can be used in an emergency, such that the race arrangers can find the location. This item is to be carried in the pocket, on the musher’s person. · Emergency food rations for the musher for at least 24 hours. · Wire or chain for use on dogs at the checkpoint, min 40cm long. Lengths of gangline or necklines with wire core can also be used. There is to be one length of wire/chain per dog in the team. Wire/chain for securing dogs may be placed in the depot sack. · Dog snacks are recognised as emergency rations for the number of dogs in the team. These can be used during the race, but must be in the sled at the start of each leg of the race. · Dead dog. If it should happen that a dog dies during the race, it should be transported in the sled to the checkpoint/finish. The dog should then be covered up on arrival at the checkpoint/finish. As soon as possible after checking in, the musher is to contact the Race Director, a race official or checkpoint official. The musher is only allowed to continue the race after permission has been granted from the Race Director. If a post-mortem examination must be carried out, this is not to be paid for by the musher. If any rules require clarification, the Race Director may be contacted.
BERGEBYLØPET TRAIL DESCRIPTIONThe trail starts at Tana Family Camping in Skiipagurra. The trail leads up to Oskarsvarden and then to Råvnejav`ri. The trail continues over Råvvejarcåk`ka, following the Varanger Ski Trail to Nyborgmoen. From Nyborgmoen along the scooter trail over Niei`davarri to Jåkkagæcci, then further eastwards to cross Eliasjåkka. Eliasjåkka marks the turning point for the 6-dog Class. The trail for the Open- and 8-dog Class continues eastwards on the scooter trail to Maddavarjåkka, crossing the Bergeby River at the junction with Maddavarjåkka. About 500m after crossing the Bergeby River, the trail takes a right-hand fork, leaving the scooter trail and following the Bergeby River southwards to Bergeby. From Bergeby, the trail goes via Gal`bmebak`ti, crosses Rassejåkka and runs to Cås`ka jav`ri. At Cås`ka jav`ri the trail meets up with the scooter trail that runs over Cås`koai`vi towards the Bergeby River to the junction with Maddavarjåkka. From here, the trail follows the same route back to Tana Family Camping, which is both checkpoint and finish.
